“Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”
Fund For Independent Journalism
What it is: A collaboration between the Alternative
Newsweekly Foundation (a 501(c)3 national journalism non-profit) and
Monterey County Weekly to provide tax-deductible financial support for
local investigative journalism.
What it will do: Fund ongoing reporting in 2021 in the areas of free speech, local economic impacts from the pandemic, government transparency and accountability, affordable housing/transportation, social justice and policing.
What you can do: Help us exceed our $10,000 challenge gift in the 2020 Monterey County Gives! Program (make your contribution online here). If you prefer to contribute by mail, send your check made payable to:
Community Foundation for Monterey County
2354 Garden Road
Monterey, CA 93940
(Please note Fund For Independent Journalism on the check memo line.)
Join us to ensure the long-term viability of the independent press in Monterey County, supporting local journalism that is both educational and serves a watchdog function.
How will I receive a receipt for tax purposes?
During our end-of-year appeal, all tax-deductible donations will be handled through Monterey County Gives! and are subject to their terms of service.
All other times: You will receive an email receipt—for your taxes—from either Givebutter.com or PayPal (whichever you used) immediately after making your contribution online. The Alternative Newsweekly Foundation can also send receipts upon request. Checks mailed to the ANF will receive a letter from the Foundation.
